Four Qualities That Defines a Good Lawyer
When faced with the question “What do you think defines a good lawyer?” what will you answer? Will you say something along the lines of “Winning me the case” or “Pro-Bono”? It’s partially true, but the question itself is rather complex and broad, so we need to stretch our answer and divide them into several parts that define every quality a good lawyer should possess in their arsenal. So, without further ado, let us dive right into the qualities:
Impeccable Communication Skills
A lawyer is someone who is supposed to be able to calm you down when you’ve just been involved in an accident or committed a crime and your nerves are going crazy. A good lawyer has to be verbally articulate enough to lay out the terms straight and concise to help you understand your current situation and the cards that you can play out. This does not mean they cannot use intelligent and big words in the courtroom before the judge and juries. Lawyers should have an extensive background of speaking in public and mooting before they can practice in the court, so having impeccable communication skills is a must for every aspiring practitioner of the law.
Good Judgement
As a practitioner of the law, a lawyer must possess good judgment based on the information that he or she is given. Even though having access to limited information or data is nothing new for a lawyer, what makes them good is how effective they can capitalize on the finite material that they are presented with and draw out a logical conclusion that illustrates critical points for the judge and juries present in court to take your side rather than your opposition. An experienced lawyer can easily spot weaknesses and flaws in their oppositions’ defense, which comes with good judgment and analytical thinking.
Research Skills
When you have time and experience, you can achieve anything. Mankind has shown its tenacity in inventing numerous life-changing inventions by doing extensive research and studies. Lawyers are one of the best when it comes to doing research and gathering data quickly. If you’ve seen The Devil’s Advocate, Keanu Reeves plays a cunning lawyer who did his research on New York state law even though he practices Florida state law, proving to be the right move because it won him the case. Any decent lawyer should master the art of drawing and preparing data from piles of information sources to come up with a winning strategy.
Creativity
Lawyers are surprisingly creative people. They are in a world where being creative sets you apart head and shoulders above the rest, so believe us when we say lawyers need to have creativity in order to win. Sometimes the best solution might not be written in the books yet, or haven’t even been thought of, and a lawyer that can outmaneuver their opponent with something totally unexpected, so on the left field, and out of the box will be highly regarded as a good lawyer.…
